Unsilence will design and deliver a highly interactive series of workshops over six (6) week period that support each team of students to: (a) Reflect on the process of creating choose-your-own-pathway stories; (b) Consider creative writing as a vehicle for exploring social justice; (c) Explore an area of social justice that they believe needs attention; and (d) Create a choose-your-own-pathway story map to "Unsilence" that social injustice. In the residency's final week, each team of students will present its original choose-your-own-pathway story map at a special Bell School Unsilence Community Expo.
Unsilence helps students talk about hidden injustices that can be difficult to talk about. Unsilence's work focuses on the process of unsilencing injustices that communities care about, which includes:
mental health and suicide
sexual and domestic violence
political asylum and refugee rights
gun violence
mass incarceration and systemic racism
transgender, lesbian, gay, and bisexual rights
girls’ and women’s rights
genocide, perpetratorship, and delayed justice
and many other issues.
Unsilence addresses a broad range of issues, because specific human rights do not exist in isolation; they are interconnected. International agreements like The Universal Declaration of Human Rights provide a foundation for our work. Through Unsilence's on-the-ground programs, partnerships, and local groups, students get to decide for themselves which injustices are most relevant and urgent.
